What Are The Functions of Omega 3 Fatty Acids?

The omega 3 fatty acids are key elements in the good functioning of the human body. The smallest and the most important part of our body, the cells, are surrounded by a cell membrane. This membrane is composed mainly of fatty acids. The cellular membrane has a vital role in the cell’s life, as it allows nutrients into the cell itself. In the same manner, it allows the quick removal of cell waste products. The cell membrane has to be integer and flexible to permit these substance changes.

If the cell’s membrane loses its integrity, it will not be able to hold water and nutrients. The cellular membrane allows for communication between cells, keeping body organs in good shape. If the membrane begins to lose its integrity, the cell will not be able to communicate with other cells. Scientists believe that one of the factors which favor the rapid growth of cancerous tumors is the loss of inter-cellular communication.

There is a close relationship between the types of fat we eat and the integrity and fluidity of cell membranes, as the membrane is made up of fats. One of the differences between the two types of fats, the omega 3 fatty acids and the saturated/hydrogenated fats is the way they behave at room temperature: the omega 3 fats are liquid in these conditions, while the hydrogenated fats are solid. Due to this reason, if you eat for a long period of time – many saturated fats, chances are that your cell membrane will be harder and will lack fluidity, whereas a diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids will lead to more fluid cell membranes.

Spices For Depression – They Really Can Spice Up Your Mood

Some spices such as saffron, sage, cardamom and chillies are known to have specific anti-depressant effects; while others work indirectly by improving the general health of the individual.

General effects of spices

Spices have the highest antioxidant activity of all food types including fruit and vegetables (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2006). Antioxidants are very important in countering free radical damage which can in turn aggravate or cause many degenerative diseases.

All chronic degenerative diseases are associated with free radical damage and an increased incidence of depression. Therefore preventing or treating them by eating antioxidant-rich foods like spices, will also help to reduce the incidence of depression.

Saffron

For centuries, saffron has been used to treat depression in traditional Persian medical systems.

Recently several clinical trials have shown that this yellow spice is indeed as effective as many of our current anti-depressant drugs in treating mild to moderate depression.

The first of these was a double-blind placebo controlled trial where patients with depression were given 30mg of saffron extract daily for six weeks. By the end of this period depression in the treatment group had improved by a far greater extent than the placebo group.

In two other clinical trials depressed patients taking saffron were compared to those taking two commonly prescribed anti-depressant drugs, imipramine and fluexitine (Prozac). In both these trials saffron was found to be at least as effective as the two modern drugs. An important bonus was that no side effects were observed in the patients taking saffron.

Chillies

Chillies also have mood elevating effects. They work by stimulating a specific type of pain receptor (called TRPV1) on sensory nerve endings. When these nerves are stimulated they signal the brain to release chemicals called endorphins. Endorphins, in turn, stimulate the release of the brain chemical, dopamine which in turn acts as a mood elevator and relieves depression.

Many modern antidepressant drugs also work by increasing levels of dopamine in the brain.

Sage

A double blind placebo controlled trial has shown that sage reduces anxiety and elevates mood. It has been known for several years that compounds in this spice work by inhibiting cholinesterase, an enzyme that is intimately involved in the transmission of signals across nerve synapses.

Sage has the added benefit of improving memory.

Cardamom

Cardamom has been used by traditional Ayurvedic practitioners to treat depression in India for thousands of years. Although there are no clinical trials to back up the use of this spice to treat depression there are biochemical reasons that give an indication as to why it is effective.

As with other organs the brain is subject to toxins, free radical damage and other environmental and genetic insults. Aging and damage caused by environmental agents can aggravate a propensity to develop depression. However this susceptibility can be reduced by using one or more of those spices known to have anti-depressive properties. In addition the diet should include a variety of other spices most of which contain neuro-protective phytonutrients; some of which may also have yet-to-be-discovered mood-elevating properties.

Does Acupuncture For Lower Back Pain Really Work?

The National Institutes of Health reports that up to 80 percent of all people in the U.S will suffer from some type of back pain. That means four out of five adults are likely to have low back pain at some point in their life, making it one of the most common ailments, second only to headache.

Wow! That’s a lot of people with back pain!

There are many treatments available to help relieve this pain. Unfortunately, there is no one single definitive treatment. So the use of acupuncture for lower back pain has become more popular over the past few years.

A number of studies have shown acupuncture as a reliable method for pain relief. In fact, the Annals of Internal Medicine has published an analysis on acupuncture for lower back pain showing that among the two dozen previously published studies on back pain treatments, acupuncture was

“significantly more effective” than no treatment.

Yet, there are still those who don’t believe in the benefits of acupuncture.

So How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture has been used to treat a number of illnesses for hundreds of years in China and many other Asian nations.

The treatment is based on the theory that the human body is made up of channels or meridians where the “life force” or qi flows through. If these meridians are blocked off because of stress or other causes of illness, it compromises the health of the individual. The goal of acupuncture, therefore, is to unblock these clogged meridians and allow the qi to once more flow freely throughout the body. This is done by sticking needles unto the affected meridians to release the qi.

Is There Science Behind Acupuncture?

In a study published in the Clinical Journal of Pain, Dr. Christer Carlsson and his colleague Dr. Bengt Sjlund of the Lund University Hospital in Sweden were able to prove the safety of using acupuncture for lower back pain.

Studying 50 patients who were suffering chronic low back pain for a minimum of six months, the scientists randomly assigned one group out of three to undergo sessions of acupuncture. The other two groups underwent electroacupuncture and placebo, respectively.

After four sessions plus a follow up treatment two months later, “significant” changes were observed in the group that underwent acupuncture for lower back pain. Based on these results, the scientists concluded that “there is now reasonable evidence that acupuncture has a clinically relevant pain-relieving effect on certain forms of chronic pain.”

So if you’re dealing with back pain, it may be worth considering acupuncture to get the pain relief you need.
